A Ukrainian engineer with a German education.
The man who developed bridges
Eugene Paton created the first all-welded bridge in the world, i.e. a bridge made by fusing and forging the edges of a product, without bolts and rivets.
Eugene Paton was born in France on March 4, 1870 and received education in Germany Technische Universität Dresden However, all his life he worked in Ukraine.
Generally, more than 50 riveted and 100 welded metal bridges were built by the project of the academician Paton.
In 1929, there was a very important turn in the scientific activity of Eugene Paton. He was fascinated by problems of electric welding of metals with unprecedented enthusiasm.
In the early 1930s were published the first monographs by Eugene Paton, which summarized the basic principles of calculation and design of welded structures. In 1932, he headed the development of an automatic welding head for open-arc welding. In 1934 Eughen Paton established the first ElectroWelding Institute in the world on the basis of his laboratory and committee. The scientist was also the author of the current method of welding, the technology of welding of special complexity and in special conditions, and the developer of an industrial flow line.
